Handling the ball and making a layup are, to me, the two most basic skills of the game.
Here is a basic set of drills that are easy to remember, and you can do these every day. Every move in your handling arsenal comes from something in this circuit. The demonstration is first and me going thru the entire circuit is the second vid:
Here is my 4-part set of Advanced Handling Drills:
Tips for avoiding back pain while dribbling/ doing drills:
What are your thoughts on stationary ball handling drills vs. moving ball handling drills?
Shouldn’t you practice more moving ball handling drills because in a real game, you wouldn’t stand stil?
Thanks!!
I do both. There is no one correct way to practice; we each do what works for us individually. There is more stationary dribbling in games than you think.
Hi Dre,
I just bought your hoop handbook for ball handling. I’ve passed day 1 and 2, but day 3 I just don’t have any time to do the drills. Could you help by giving me a 14 day workout, with the same results? Like maybe to do half of day 3s drills in one day, then next half on the next day.
Thanks!!
BTW: I am scared of losing the skills if I don’t do it on consecutive days. And I mean on day 3 I can’t do all the drills, I can do the basic circuit and the full court ones but then I run out of time.
THanks again.
Hello,
What if you just started basketball? I can only do around 4 reps in a row (while looking at the ball) without stuffing up. Should I keep looking at the ball and just do 4 reps until I can do more, or start not looking at the ball and keep practicing? Without look at the ball I can do like 2 reps max lol.
Thanks,
Hey Dre, I just found out about your vids from a friend and I recently have got serious about playing basketball now. I’m 14 years old and a freshman in high school, I have a decent jump shot but I can’t drive in the lane correctly because I always lose the ball. My question is should I do these ball handling drills in a indoor court at the gym or it doesn’t matter where? and also what other advice do you have for someone just becoming serious about play ball??

If you run out of time pick it up where/when you can; as you improve each drill will take less time. That is the purpose of training.
You did two days of workouts and are already wanting to do something else. Help yourself, by following the program.

Just do it how you need to and get better. Don’t wait for instructions.

Hello and welcome to the show. If you are just starting out then stick to the basics — Ball Handling, Making Layups, Using both hands, Shooting. If you’re looking for specific, detailed workouts, check out the Hoop Handbook.
Best advice is to have fun, basketball is a game after all. Enjoy it.
