I tell people that my two biggest influences in making it into professional basketball were 1) My last college coach booting my off the team as a junior and 2) my mother strongly disagreeing with my loose “plan” to become a pro after college.
Those are two motivations driven purely by ego. It was my sense of pride and, my need to be right and for vengeance that drove me. It was unhealthy in some ways, that drive.
And I would do the same things all over again.
On his last album, Jay-Z said, “sometimes you need your ego.” I think you need it more than sometimes.
