The following questions get asked of me every day. This post answers them all for you in one convenient place. Go get my free PDF 46 Things You MUST Know when you’re done reading.
How old must one be to try out?
18 is the minimum age.
Do you need to go to college to play or try out?
No. In my experience however, players who didn’t play in college usually aren’t very good at basketball. But if you’re an exception, prove it on the court.
Will not having college experience hurt my chances?
Who cares? If you’re going to do it, do it. Not taking action hurts your chances the most.
How do I find tryouts for playing basketball?
The same way you found this page. Google’s your friend.
Where can I find a local D-League Tryout?
Google’s your friend. If you’re 18 or older (eligible for trying out), you’re too old to be asking anyone this question as if you’re some dummy who can’t think for himself. Stop it.
How are the tryouts run?
As with any tryout, the people in charge do it their own way, and that way can change at any moment. Meaning, what I experienced in 2009 or 2012 won’t be the same thing you experience in 2020, even if the same people are running the show. In other words, show up and bring your game so you’re ready for whatever.
Is it worth the time and money to even go?
If you’re asking this, you must ask yourself how serious you really are about playing pro basketball. This is, essentially an NBA tryout camp. If you are questioning if that’s worth it, maybe you’re not serious about basketball.
