How To Get Recognized For Your Skills and Focus On Your Main Ability — Without Doing Everything On Your Own…

I was listening to Future (the rapper) one day this week and I realized something: the guy has done a great job of choosing producers.

As far as I know, Future does the raps, and his producers do the rest.

(A lot of rappers do this, but I was listening to Future when this dawned on me.)

The production on Future’s songs meld perfectly with his rapping style, which leads to popular songs.

Back in the late 1990s, there was this rapper named Canibus (not cannabis, but Canibus) who took the mixtape world by storm.

This was back at the time when you had to physically go to the store and buy the actual tape or CD.

Canibus was an incredible rapper whose lyrical skill, even then, would rival any rapper who you’ve heard of since. Throw on a beat and let Canibus rap, and he’d impress you. It was almost as if the guy had memorized the dictionary.

Truth: At raw rapping, Canibus was better than Future.

Problem: just rapping alone doesn’t make for good music or a long music career.

The best musical artists make great songs, which include not just lyrics, but also hooks/choruses and production.

Canibus was great at rapping. But his songs and choruses sucked, and his producers (who are ostensibly supposed to help with the song making and choruses) were not good matches for his style.

Which is why you, reading this, are either nodding your head at the memory of Canibus, or you’ve never even heard of Canibus.

I told you before about choosing wisely. The juxtaposition of Canibus (an amazing rapper who’d chosen unwisely) and Future (a good rapper who’s surrounded himself with people who are great at everything else) demonstrates this.

You could swap out “Future” with Jay-Z. Or Drake. Or whoever your favorite artist is. They’ve all done what Canibus failed to do, even though Canibus was better at rapping than all of them.

When you master your main skill, your work is not done — next, identify the other skills that will help shine the brightest light on your main skill, and make wise choices in who has those skills.

Don’t try to acquire all those skills on your own. You’ll run out of time, and you’re taking away from your main skill every minute you’re doing anything else.

This whole process may take some time, which is fine — just be working on it.
