Eleven years ago, I was an unemployed professional basketball player who was determined to remove the “un-” from “unemployed.”
Starting in September, I sent out 10-20 personalized emails per day to professional teams worldwide, marketing my playing services.
I did this on the side of holding down a full time job at LA Fitness.
Those emails produced several conversations that led nowhere.
Teams who were interested but didn’t have the money to pay me.
Clubs who liked my game but already had American players under contract.
General managers who told me to get in touch with them the following summer, when they’d again be looking for players.
I finally connected with an interested, available and sufficiently-funded team a week before Christmas that year, after sending around 1,000 messages to teams.
Would I have followed the same strategy had I known from the beginning that I’d have to send 1,000 emails just to get one job offer?
Probably. But not everyone is like me.
Goals are hard to reach.
Depending on how big your goals are, they may be really damn far away from where you are now. A whole day’s worth of effort may not be enough to make you feel any closer to a result.
It’s daunting to look at a destination that you’re still so far from, and continue to believe that you’ll one day get there.
Here’s one way to keep yourself going: focus on the habits that will get you to the goal.
Writing a book is hard. If you’ve never done it, it’s hard to visualize a finished book with a well-designed, glossy cover that has your name on it and an audience of people who actually want to buy it.
But, you can focus on writing for thirty minutes today, right?
Don’t worry about how many days you’d have to put together to get a book out of such a habit. Just write for thirty minutes, today.
Can you do that?
Then, do that again tomorrow.
Over time, you’ll have something to work with.

Goals are important. But they’re hard to focus on by design: you’re either there, or you’re not — and most of the time, “you’re not.”
That can be quite discouraging.
The bridge between today and your goal are the habits, or what some refer to as a “system:” the process of repeatable actions that will create the realization of a goal.
If you can create and follow a system, you can reach a goal.
Going to the gym is system.
Getting up early is a system.
Checking the numbers of your business is a system.
Keeping sweets and junk food out of your shopping cart is a system.
Consistently followed, systems take from “not there” to “there.”
